In 2004, Merv Epstein purchased Budget Blinds of Greater Charleston. Residing on Daniel Island, Epstein pursued many different business ventures, from athletic club ownership to real estate development; he later landed on a franchise opportunity in which he saw great potential. Bringing his son and son-in-law into the window covering business with him, Epstein expanded his Budget Blinds territory, and opened a showroom in Mount Pleasant while maintaining inventory and office space on Daniel Island. All the while, the secret ingredient to maintaining a successful business for ten years seemed to be the personal service provided by a family operation.
Epstein elaborates as to why people respond so positively to this type of business. “We offer hands-on customer service and our customers feel comfortable knowing they can always speak to the owner,” he suggests. “The family-run business seems to bring a more personal touch and a level of trust that people like.” Epstein also attributes his continuous growth to repeat customers and referral business—making up nearly 55% of his business.
